Summer is many people’s favorite time of the year. It’s naturally want to soak up the sun and just relax. However, the sun is one of the most dangerous things for the body. It will cause skin to mature and can cause health issues. The great news is there are ways to protect your skin.
Sunscreen is one of the most important parts of anti-aging and beauty care. Whether you’re wearing makeup or not, you need to use sunscreen. So, if you’re applying the makeup, the moisturizing cream (because you know that’s great for anti-aging), and the sunscreen, how do you layer it all?
Never Skip the Sunscreen
It doesn’t matter what your makeup is like or how often you apply it. Sunscreen is the most important item in your beauty tool kit during the summer months. It’s designed to keep the harmful UV rays out.
Many people believe that sunscreen prevents a tan. That’s certainly not the case! It prevents the burning and the distortion of the cells in the skin. Even if you don’t burn, it will prevent the signs of mature skin because of the harmful rays.
Even if you’re planning on remaining indoors all day or you’re just heading between the car and work, you’ll need to apply sunscreen. Just a little exposure every day will add up over time and you get some exposure through your windows!
Layer for More Protection?
There’s another common misconception: layering makeup, moisturizing cream, and sunscreen will improve your skin protection. If you have a foundation that has an SPF of 20, a sunscreen of SPF of 40, and a moisturizing cream with a low SPF of 15, you’ll get SPF 75, right?
That’s not the case. The skin is protected with the highest number you’ve put directly onto your skin, so you’re protected with the SPF 40. That doesn’t mean layering isn’t important.
You don’t want to just rely on makeup with an SPF. While it’s certainly good to have that protection, it’s not the best type of protection for the anti-aging and other damage of your skin. You should have a minimum of SPF 30 on your skin at all times. This doesn’t just prevent from burning but prevents from the UV rays harming the cell structure of your skin.
Most makeup doesn’t come with an SPF high enough. Neither do many moisturizers. So you want to get a good sunscreen instead.
Which Order Do You Layer?
When you are layering, you want to get the products in the right order. Sunscreen SPF is tested pure. Nothing is put over it, which could distort the protection the skin gets. So, you’ll want to make the sunscreen the final step in the process.
You should apply the sunscreen 15-30 minutes before leaving and then top up ever few hours (sooner if you go into the water).
The moisturizing cream tends to come first. If you’re not going out in makeup, you may be able to skip the moisturizing cream. This will depend on the type of sunscreen you have. Many sunscreens that are fragrance free have a moisturizing element to them, protecting your skin. It’s up to you if you want to add a moisturizer for daily anti-aging benefits.
When using makeup, you’ll need to apply that over the top of your sunscreen. Wait five minutes after you’ve applied the sunscreen and then start your makeup routine. You don’t need to use a foundation with an SPF value, but it will offer extra protection for your face if you do. It’s not stronger but is an extra layer.
Avoid excess pressure or over-blending your foundation. You will affect the quality of your sunscreen.
Reapply Water-Resistant Sunscreen
You may be tempted to buy a good water-resistant sunscreen to reduce the amount you have to reapply throughout the day. However, while water-resistant, it’s not necessarily going to be waterproof. The idea is the sunscreen offers protection while you’re in the water, but afterward you need to top up the coverage.
The SPF will be weakened with the water exposure. Adding another layer of your sunscreen is going to keep the coverage as strong as possible, helping to prevent the risk of mature skin. With the right skin care routine, you can prevent mature skin from developing. Layering your sunscreen and makeup doesn’t have to be difficult. Just don’t skip the sunscreen. It’s the best anti-aging product money can buy and will also protect your overall health.
